Welcome to Biloxi, Mississippi.
Biloxi is located in Harrison County and it is the county seat. It lies on Mississippi Sound, along Interstate 10. Biloxi is situated mid-way between New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama with driving time being about 90 minutes to either city. The area is serviced by the Gulfport/Biloxi Regional Airport, which is located in Gulfport. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 50,644.
Biloxi was among the first European settlements in the Mississippi Valley. In 1717, French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste le Moyne helped settle Biloxi. The name is taken from a Lakota Indian word for "original people."
Shrimp and oyster fishing were the economic mainstay of Biloxi for many years. Today, the city is the site of nine dockside casinos, which enhance a longstanding tourist trade. Major employment sources are tourism, hospitality, gaming, gaming support, construction and affiliate businesses. Keesler Air Force Base hosts several technical schools and provides jobs for many residents. A significant local attraction is the Beauvoir, Jefferson Davis Home & Presidential Library.
It is easy to see how Biloxi got this nickname -- just check out the 24 GOLF courses, variety of hotel/golf packages, year-round sunny weather, and Southern hospitality, and you'll see why. Golf is popular here 12 months a year-- visitors who come down in February will be putting in our usual 60 degree weather.

The Prime Outlets at Gulfport are also in the midst of an expansion, bringing shoppers more bargains in name-brand clothing, home accessories, jewelry, books, music and more. Tommy Hilfiger and Gap Outlets have recently opened, bringing the total number of stores to over sixty. Also the Crossroads Center at I-10 and Hwy 49 was recently completed and includes such stores as Belks Department Store, TJ Maxx, PetsMart, Chuck E. Cheese, and Old Navy. Finally, for those in search of unique finds, a huge flea market is held every weekend in Pass Christian, just off of Interstate 10.
